Chapter 36

Leotie’s thoughts jumped back and forth from one problem to another while excitement welled up. Her family and tribe was no longer far away. Soon, she would see them. They’d left the wagon behind and started the hike toward her tribe’s new home. By the position of the sun leaning toward the west, she guessed it to be about seven in the evening. Hunter, of course, stayed right next to Finn.

“So, what were you going to tell me?” Finn asked as they started a narrow trail up the hill.

“I hate to even mention this, but I came across another shifter. Her name is Goldie,” Leotie filled in the details, figuring this would satisfy Finn’s curiosity – without mentioning the orb. “When I refused to give her information about the lightning shift, she tried to kill me.”

Finn’s mouth dropped. “She dare not come here with the three of you, right?”

“Probably not, but I can’t say for sure. She is a strange one.”

This feels so wrong. She had never held anything back from Finn before, and the urge to tell him about the orb was difficult to fight. Still, she didn’t want to cause a problem with her clan-mates right after reuniting.

At least it seemed they would reach the Mahasi camp before nightfall. Finn still had a slight limp and wasn’t moving fast enough. This didn’t stop him from asking more questions.

“So where do you think she went?” Finn asked.

“I don’t know, but I worry about how she found me.”

Anti gave her a long stare, as if to warn her not to mention the orb.

“Markus had no travel limits,” Finn said. “He probably visited her more than you could ever know.”

“It’s possible. Maybe he was considering her to help with his plans too.” She wondered why Markus had kept Goldie such a secret.

Finn’s walking grew even slower. “The bad part is, she might be tracking you.”

Leotie sent her thoughts to the rest of the clan, so Finn and Samuel couldn’t hear. “Finn has a point,” she thought to her clan. “She might even know how to activate the orb.”

“I’m aware of the danger and will take precautions,” Anti thought.

“What if she slips into our camp, pretending to be someone else?” Leotie said out loud, not wanting Finn to realize they were talking behind his back.

“It won’t be that easy,” Anti said. “We always have scouts looking for any sign of man or shifter. We’ve done so ever since we left Dover, never knowing if one day Markus would find us.”

Anti switched into thoughts. “We also need to find a way to use the orb. It’s the only way to keep our people safe. Four lighting shifters will certainly make the Mahasi invincible.”

Four lighting shifters? Leotie coughed at the thought.

“You all right?” Finn asked.

“Oh yes, just a little dry.” Leotie straightened, and took a sip from the canteen. All of us with the power? That’s crazy.

She wanted to enjoy the return to her tribe, but inside she was squirming. Anti kept looking at her as if he wanted to talk to her alone, where the others couldn’t hear his thoughts.
